Satyam opens third facility in Australia

Hyderabad: Satyam Computer Services, an IT services major, has opened a third facility at Brisbane in Australia to strengthen its global service delivery model. Besides serving the local Australian market, the new centre will also develop future enterprise applications for Satyam's clients.
The company is also looking at raising its revenues from Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and India from the present 18 percent to 20 percent. "We have about 800 people in Australia, of which 50 are in Brisbane. About 42 percent of our workforces in Australia are locals. We also have 400 associates doing offshore work for Australian clients," said Virender Aggarwal, Director and Senior Vice-President (APAC & MEIA), Satyam Computer Services.
The new centres are in line with the company's effort to mitigate risk through a virtual global delivery model. "Our aim is to have a multi-cultural work force as this will help control attrition and rising cost of wages particularly when the dollar is weakening. Our customers are also looking at multi-language capabilities and by hiring locals, we expect to serve this need," he said.
If the company sends an employee from India to onsite work in Australia, it has to pay about 60,000 Australian dollars a year as per the immigration rules. Hiring a fresh graduate from Australia will bring down the cost considerably. "We have also offered scholarships to about 100 Australian students. They will undergo training in India and will join the company by February," said Aggarwal.
In the Asia-Pacific region, the company has facilities in Malaysia, China and Egypt and India.
