Bangalore: SanDisk has launched a new 64 gigabyte solid-state drive (SSD), which the makers claim to be the world's smallest SSD. The integrated SSD or iSSD is just the size of a postage stamp.
The iSSD, the size of which is 18 by 20mm, is expected to end up in tablet PCs, netbooks, smartphones and other gadgets of today that prefer hardware to be as small and miniature as possible.
iSSD's advantages include the absence of any mechanical or moving parts. It can be directly attached to the computer's motherboard, thus leaving interior space inside the machine. The iSSD is the first flash SSD device to support the industry standard SATA interface in a small BGA (Ball Grid Array) package that can be soldered onto any motherboard, and is fast enough to use as a boot drive.
The drive is less than two mm thick and weighs less than a gram. SanDisk has revealed that iSSD products have been made available to manufacturing clients for evaluation. The makers have also added that though the present storage capacity of 64GB is not enough to run a laptop, the capacity will increase in time. Nothing has been announced on the pricing of the SSD yet.
