India: South Korea's Samsung Electronics is reportedly planning to sell its hard disc division business for about 1.5 billion. However they are ready to negotiate at 1 billion as well. One of the principal competitors of Samsung, Seagate technology is a potential buyer for this division. Acquisition of Samsung Hard disc division would give a strong boost to Seagate Technology as against its chief rivals, Western Digital, which recently unveiled plans to acquire HDD business unit of Hitachi. However neither Samsung nor Seagate has given any official nod to it. Although there has been a strong sale of hard drives in both the 3.5in and 2.5in formats still this division of the company has been constantly facing losses. This has been mainly due to the small scale of Samsung's hard disc manufacturing capabilities in comparison to its rivals. The world's largest maker of dynamic random access memory is looking to get rid of financial losses and invest the proceeds in new growth areas. This move from Samsung would reduce hard disk manufacturers to three. Western Digital has recently acquired Hitachi Global Storage and Fujitsu. Now Toshiba is the only other independent hard drive manufacturer in market.
