SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co., the world's No. 2 semiconductor manufacturer, announced Thursday it has developed the world's fastest memory chip with a wide range of graphics applications, reports Xinhua. Samsung said it produced samples of a 512-megabyte double data rate (DDR) 3 dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip that it claims is the fastest available in the same class of chips. The new chip can process data at a speed of 1.6-gigabits per second. The new DDR3 DRAM reduces power consumption by 50 percent and increases memory capacity and efficiency while doubling performance, a company statement said. The company plans to begin mass production of the 512-megabyte DDR3 DRAM next year. According to market researcher Mercury, the worldwide market for graphics DRAMs is expected to grow 30 percent from this year to $1.5 billion next year, of which DDR3 DRAMs will account for about 30 percent.
