Samsung, Sony to boost sale of 3D TV sets
London: The prices of 3D TV sets have declined and with the growing acceptability towards technology, Samsung is expected to sell the lion's share of 3D TVs this year and following Samsung's line would be Sony, Panasonic and LG Electronics. Samsung and Sony may be in discussions about a 3D alliance, and Sony hopes 3D models will make up 10 percent of the more than 25 million LCD TVs is aims to sell in the next fiscal year. Technology research firm ISuppli expects 4.2 million 3D TV sets to be sold this year, or about 2 percent of all LCD TVs, rising to 78 million in 2015. Interest in 3D has grown fast, both among experts and the general public. Public curiosity toward 3D has been raised, thanks to the Hollywood superhit 'Avatar' that released end of 2009. As per TV analyst Stewart Clarke of research firm Informa, customer awareness about 3D went up to 60 percent among U.S. people. Furthermore sports have also become a major tool in promoting the 3D scenario. ESPN launched its first 3D channel in the midst of the Soccer World Cup. In fact, French media firms have predicted sports and porn to be utmost harbingers of 3D acceptance. This is so because the viewer feels the excitement of being placed in the middle of the action, instead of being a distant observer. Currently, 3D TVs cost about one-and-a-half times as much as equivalent 2D high-definition sets, however, the good news is prices are falling.
