Salim Group will acquire land only with public consensus

Kolkata: Indonesia's Salim Group, slated to take up a slew of projects in West Bengal, will acquire or purchase land only in those areas where there is "complete consensus of people" for it, a top company official said here Thursday. "We will acquire or purchase land for our projects in those areas where we will get complete consensus of the people," Prasoon Mukherjee, chief of Universal Success, a partner of the Salim Group, told reporters after a meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The projects undertaken by the company in the state include development of integrated infrastructure comprising townships, housing, special economic zones (SEZs), industrial parks, power plant and other related infrastructure. It is also constructing the Kolkata West International City. It is setting up a chemical hub in joint venture with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation and New Kolkata International Development. It was earlier proposed to come up at Nandigram but due to opposition to land acquisition the project was shifted to Nayachar. "We are committed to our projects that we have undertaken," said Beni Santoso, executive director of the Salim Group. Salim and Mukherjee's Universal Success are investors in the project, Ciputra the developer and Singapore-based Surbana the project manager. The proposed total investment of the projects would be in the tune of 5,000 billion, Mukherjee said. Regarding the production from the two-wheeler manufacturing unit of the company, Mahabharat Motors Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, the officials said it will start manufacturing from next June and will produce 7,000 units per month.
