Mumbai: JSW Steel vice chairman and managing director Sajjan Jindal has been conferred the Willy Korf/Ken Iverson Steel Vision Award for his contribution to the steel industry, the company said in a statement Thursday. Jindal is the second Indian to receive the honour. In 2002, then Tata Steel managing director Jamshed J. Irani bagged the prestigious award, instituted by American Metal Market, an online metal price information provider, and World Steel Dynamics, an industry tracker. In his receiving speech at a function in New York, Jindal said global steel production and consumption numbers for May indicated negative growth in most regions, sharply in some cases. The only exceptions were China, with a "more or less flat growth" of just 0.6 percent, and India, which boasted a 9.5 percent growth. "I feel very fortunate that at this time in the steel cycle I am in India and expanding our business in an expanding market," he said. "It is also important for the global steel industry to strengthen the supply chain if it is to come out from the present global economic crisis in a stronger and more stable state." Jindal, who is also the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), said the Indian government had also provided "tremendous incentives" to the steel industry.
