BANGALORE: The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has opposed Vijay Mallya?s UB?s registration of its flagship whisky brand, McDowell, in several markets outside India, like South Africa, on the pretext of its Scottish name. SWA official, David Williamson, said that the Scottish names on non-Scotch whiskies would mislead consumers of the product?s origin. Mallya has attacked the SWA and EU for building non-trade barriers by alluding to product definition problems to keep Indian whiskies at bay in the global markets. The Delhi High Court had also favored the petition from SWA for disallowing the use of the name Scot on Indian whiskies that has troubled Indian brands like Peter Scot and Bonnie Scot.
