Rupee sign can now squeeze into keyboards
Bangalore: Microsoft and other software vendors will be able to bring out the rupee symbol with a combination of keystrokes. The rupee sign is poised to invade the software lexicon and squeeze into computer keyboards as well as cellphones, a shift that will help ratchet up its global acceptance swiftly, reports N Shivapriya and Harsimran Julka of the Economic Times. "Having a symbol for the rupee will take up less memory," said Satish Mohan, Director of software engineering at Red Hat (India). Microsoft attunes products to local needs. The company already provides local language support in Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi and Tamil for Windows XP. "New keyboards will have the rupee symbol," says George Paul, Executive Vice-President at HCL Infosystems, who have the similar plans to introduce new equipment. Keen on making transitions, Ranjit Yadav, Director, mobile and IT, Samsung India said "It will be the next logical step for mobile manufacturers to include the symbol on handsets." When OS vendors incorporate the code for the rupee sign, it will become omnipresent in the techworld. "All our web products are optimised to handle changes in web content," said Shailesh Rao, MD, Google India.
