Mumbai: The rupee weakened by 13 paise to trade at Rs 45.54 against the US dollar in early trade today due to sustained demand for dollar.
Dealers said continued demand for the US dollar from importers and dollar gains against other Asian currencies overseas, mainly put pressure on the rupee.
However, a better opening in the stock market capped the rupee's losses, they added.
The rupee had lost 4 paise to close at
45.41/42 against the US dollar yesterday on dollar demand from importers.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex rose by 76.01 points, or 0.45 percent, to 16,916.815 points in opening trade.
