'Rise of India can trigger violence in U.S.'

Friday, 17 April 2009, 01:38 Hrs
New York: After protests against Indian steel and a right-wing radio show host calling Indians "slumdogs" for doing outsourced American jobs, India's rise could be a factor in triggering radical violence in the US, warns an intelligence report.

Prepared by the Department of Homeland Security, the report says that Barack Obama's election as the first black president, rising unemployment because of the economic crisis, and resentment against rising India and China could revive right-wing radical extremism in the US.

Granite City in Obama's home state of Illinois had witnessed protests this week over the use of Indian steel to build 1,600-mile (about 2570 km) pipeline from Canada to Oklahoma.

Earlier this week, right-wing radio show host Rush Limbaugh called Indians handling outsourced jobs "slumdogs". The pugnacious conservative talk show host outraged Americans some time ago by saying that he wanted President Obama to fail.

The latest intelligence report, circulated among state authorities, warns that various factors could lead to a violent backlash by conservative groups.

Citing the case of 1995 Oklahoma City bomber and Gulf War hero Timothy McVeigh, who killed 165 people to avenge government clampdown on a right-wing religious sect in Texas and rural militias, the report warns that some disgruntled veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan could join conservatives to "boost the capabilities of extremists... to carry out violence".

Citing a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report, the intelligence document warns that some troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq had already joined extremist groups.

Like McVeigh, any trained US military veteran could carry out independent attacks or help form terrorist cells, thus posing "the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States", according to the report quoted in the US media.

It says the current situation has "similarities to the 1990s, when right-wing extremism experienced a resurgence fuelled largely by an economic recession, criticism about the outsourcing of jobs, and the perceived threat to US power and sovereignty by other foreign powers".

Obama's election as the first black president and his proposed legislation for tighter gun controls have not gone down well with conservative groups.

"The economic downturn and the election of the first African American president present unique drivers for right-wing radicalisation and recruitment," according to the report.

Apart from these domestic factors, the rising economic clout of China, India and Russia could also trigger right-wing radicalisation in the US, the intelligence report cautions.

3: Rush Limbaugh did NOT want Obama to fail. He wants his policies to fail. Obama's policies are overt socialism and border on racism. Americans want ALL DEMOCRACIES to succeed both politically and economically, but NOT at the expense of cannibalizing each other. WE in America did NOT coin the phrase slumdog as I recall. How it is used may be subject to the defines of good taste. It is wise for everyone in the world to remember that what looks like interference in others affairs, is our desire to HELP the world. Obama confuses arrogance with confidence. He is a total ahole.

4:some of u guys sound like muslim radicals and less like Americans. Moreover, FYI....If u guys dont know.....The terrorists that American soldiers are fighting today......were created by America itself. Hundreds of Thousands of Indians have died earlier because of Britishers and in the past three decades because of Americans. Even Pakistan and Afganistan that America is today trying to contain have been funded by Americans as well. America has spent billions creating them and now Amercia is spending billions containing them.

Let me also clarify that Obama is at least better than the earlier jerk...Bush....Skin color does not in any way define sense, sensibility, maturity etc

8: Although 'corruption' is universal, it is definitely not in the same league as India & Mexico. Being a NRI, who moved to the US in the 60s, I know that I had to resort to paying "bakshish" to the local Police Station, in order to get my clearance. I am very surprised that it still exists. TOTALLY agre with Mr. Walter Hesse on this subject

9: This is a universal phenomenon. I dont think any country would take failure.. not US alone.
When somebody loses somebody else wins.
And it is the forces of hatred that become the first rise of casualties of failing policies.

Walter I agree that slumdog was not coined in the US nor was the word Nig_er but how it is used as you noted needs to be well within confines of good taste.. and how Rush Limbaugh uses it ...I am sure you would agree is not.
Yes I agree that Obama's approach is more socialist in nature than capitalist..... but it is that same capitalism that has brought about this massive downturn. So there needs to be a review on how to use capitalism to the fullest. I support both theories and think if used judiciously, both can spew prosperity for the respective countries. SO there is no harm in Obama using a little socialist overtures to shore up some confidence in foriegn investors and then make the step to move the govt out of the market(easier said than done.. I understand).
Further I dont think your views on wanting democracies to succeed by "HELPING" them is right.. this is what in the rest of the world, we call as "Interference".. and any person meddling in my life, I would politely ask them to butt out.. my life is mine to manage... and our country is ours to manage... not yours to HELP. On the issue of racism and hate crimes.. the reason or the root why these are happening or will happen is due to Republican ridiculousness towards governance... the ridiculousness that I am talking about is electing an aHOLE like Bush to the white house... I am totally for conservative views when it comes to size f government etc.... not in the president that was elected to carry out evangelical policies rather than conservative governance. I think that is my opening and ending argument!
