Reliance Industries, India's largest refiner and petrochemicals maker, Monday said it has entered into an alliance with Dupont Polyester Technologies for research and development activities in India.

NEW DELHI: As part of the alliance, Reliance and Dupont Polyester will jointly develop advanced polyester process and product technologies in India, said a statement issued by Reliance Industries. Dupont Polyester Technologies is the technology development and licensing arm of Dupont Textiles and Interiors (DTI). "The strategic alliance will not only enable Reliance and DTI to explore jointly new areas of research opportunity, but also pursue many promising projects already in the DTI and Reliance research pipelines," said the statement. The intellectual property from joint developments under the alliance will be available, on a royalty free basis, to both Reliance and DTI. "This strategic agreement is an important milestone for both companies and one based on convergence of business objectives," said Subodh Sapra, president (polyester sector) of Reliance Industries Ltd. "However, I believe the final consumer, both in India and the U.S., will ultimately benefit as new products are brought to the marketplace, through world-class polyester research and development in India," he added. Reliance said it is already engaged in polyester research and development and is now building a new state-of-the-art Research and Technology Centre at Patalganga, near Mumbai. "We are sure that this (alliance) will enable both DTI and Reliance to enhance their positions as world leaders in polyester," said Robert Graham, director of Dupont Polyester Technologies. Dupont India, the local arm of the U.S.-based company, markets a wide range of products in a host of industrial sectors including food and nutrition, healthcare, apparel, home and construction, electronics and transportation. The company has five manufacturing facilities in three locations in India - Savli in Gujarat, Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad. It is currently in the process of setting up the sixth facility in Gujarat.
