AHMEDABAD : Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) Wednesday announced plans to set up a port-based special economic zone (SEZ) in Gujarat. RIL chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani said: "RIL is actively working with the Gujarat government on three plans. We propose to set up a port-based SEZ and a full-fledged university and provide piped cooking gas in the state." Ambani was speaking at the inaugural session of 'Vibrant Gujarat', the two-day global investors' summit organised by the state government to attract more infrastructure investment. "We have found large gas reserves on the east coast, which will be transferred to Gujarat. In the mid-term future, we aim to provide piped gas, a safe and cheap fuel, to millions of homes," Ambani said. Investments of 20 billion ($450 million) were already under way for the group's various projects, he said. "Reliance is a company founded by my father Dhirubhai here in his land, Gujarat. It has three million shareholders, a majority of them from Gujarat. Reliance signifies the spirit of Gujarat, which is all about effort, enterprise and endurance." Congratulating Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his initiative to attract more investments in the state, Ambani said: "Vibrant Gujarat is not only a business event, it is also a declaration of Gujarat's determination to move ahead. "Western India led the economic development of the country. In recent years, however, the southern states have marched ahead. I think Gujarat can regain its premier position. "The state has to focus on service and technology. Abolition of the quota regime has provided new opportunities in the textile industry, which traditionally has a base in the state. "Similarly, the new patent regime has thrown up new opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry, which also has a sizeable presence in the state," he said.
