KOLKATA: Reliance, India's biggest private company, is to roll out its basic telephone service across the country next month with four rental plans. Company officials said Tuesday the landline service was to begin from May 1. However, the company's problems with its limited mobility service pushed back the launch of the basic facility. The facility would now be marketed from early next month. "Laying of the optic fibre network across major cities and town is complete and the offer details are ready. When the service starts is now an administrative decision," the sources said. The Reliance offer goes like this -- a subscriber pays 1,800 upfront for a connection, 1,000 as security deposit and 800 as installation charges. After this, the client has to choose from the four rental plans. Plan I at 250 a month; Plan II at 500; Plan III at 1,000; Plan IV at 1,500. Call charges would range from 30 paise per minute for Plan IV to 40 paise for Plan I for a landline-to-landline call within 50 km. Charges for long distance intra and inter circle fixed line calls would vary between 90 paise and 4.80 per minute. The company would provide free fixed wireless LG Electronics phones. The company's teleservices would be available in 700 cities and towns. In the first phase, it would be offered in 111. It is slated to pump 7.5 billion to set up a countrywide network of more than 1,000 retail outlets that would provide a one-stop solution to all telecom needs. Retail outlets would be in place by the middle of the current fiscal year, company sources said. The investment would mostly flow from internal mobilisation. These outlets would offer a gamut of telecom services, including telephones, Internet connections and related equipment. Company officials have short-listed 120 cities where these outlets would come up. Eventually, however, 500 cities would be brought under this retail outlet network. Reliance Infocomm is laying India's largest optic fibre network covering an area of 60,000-km at a staggering investment of 250 billion.
