MUMBAI: Electronics major LG plans to shift a large part of its software development operations for cell phones to its subsidiary, LG Software India (LGSIL), in Bangalore . This will be the biggest global software development centre for LG. LG also has development centres in San Diego and China , which are much smaller than those in India . Commenting on setting up a manufacturing capacity here, Mr Park said, “LG is examining the issue, but it depends on the government policy, which does not seem to be too conducive at this stage. Moreover, with most of the cost components in a cell phone shifting to software, a software development centre is far more important than a manufacturing base.“ Meanwhile, LG Electronics said on Friday it had shipped 5m handsets to Reliance Infocomm. “Reliance Infocomm has become the second largest customer in the world for LG’s handset division,” Mr Park said. LG is the largest CDMA mobile handset supplier in India . Internationally, LG Electronics commands market leadership in CDMA handsets with a market share of 23%, having displaced Samsung from top spot in ’03. LG also became fifth largest handset provider worldwide, displacing Sony Ericsson. LG aims to dominate all price segments in India , with mobile handsets increasingly being driven by innovative features, convenient usage, desirable applications and stylish looks, company officials said.
