Chennai: Reliance Industries' Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi discussed details of the company's plan to supply natural gas directly to homes via pipeline and work with farmers in the state for marketing their produce. The plan as disclosed by Ambani is to bring large quantity of natural gas from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh through a pipeline to Tamil Nadu. "After Andhra Pradesh, our focus will be Tamil Nadu. In the next two to three years, we want hundreds and thousands of homes in Tamil Nadu to get piped natural gas, which will be 25-35 percent cheaper than LPG," he added. A second project on working with framers in the distribution was also discussed, as the CM stressed on the benefits of gas supply reaching the people of Tamil Nadu. The TN government has promised necessary support for the projects and the details are being worked out. Union Minister for IT and Communication Dayanidhi Maran said that CNG supply would be a boon to the people as it will initially cover major towns and over a three-year period, cover all the towns in the state. Starting with major cities such as Chennai, RIL would supply the gas across the State through pipeline. An alternative to LPG, the "compressed natural gas" could also be used to run vehicles as in Delhi, he said. The project is expected to start by the month end by launching 12 stores in Chennai.
