KOLKATA: RED Hat India Pvt Ltd is locating a Red Hat support center in Kolkata to reinforce the Linux-powered open source software movement in the eastern region. The proposed support center will lend the gamut of professional software support services on a subscription basis to large buyers of Linux-based enterprise applications in the eastern states. The Red Hat India support center will also bolster the Linux operating system (Linux-OS) localisation drive in Bengali. However, Red Hat India is yet to decide on the scale of the Linux support venture in Kolkata. At present, Red Hat India has its major support wing in Mumbai which oversees all Linux initiatives nationally. A Red Hat India team recently sounded out the West Bengal IT minister Manabendra Mukherjee and state IT secretary G D Gautama on the company’s plans in Kolkata, which will be positioned as the eastern regional hub to propel the Linux wave. Red Hat plans to work closely with the likes of IBM, Oracle, Computer Associates, Veritas and Hewlett-Packard to shore up the regional offtake of Linux-based software applications, company officials said. Red Hat India director Javed Tapia told ET: “Red Hat India is keen to locate a support centre in Kolkata for addressing the emerging Linux opportunity in the eastern states. We have held preliminary discussions with the West Bengal IT department.”
