CHENNAI: Red Hat India, Linux and open source solutions provider, is to set up a sales and support office in Chennai in the next four months. Sachin Dabir, head-enterprise sales, Red Hat India said, it was a part of the company’s plans to expand the southern market. He said government, banking, telecom and public sector units would drive the demand for Linux and open source software applications. Dabir said, while the government and public sector units provided the initial thrust, increasingly private sector companies have started looking at Linux-based applications. On the supply side too, a number of IT companies are gearing up their operations to develop Linux applications, thanks mainly to the demands from their customers. Availability of standard applications, guarantee of technical support and the low initial investment and total cost of ownership have made Linux and open source software increasingly acceptable to the enterprises. Red Hat Desktop, launched recently, had been well-received, Dabir added.
