Randox to set up manufacturing unit in India

BELFAST: Northern Ireland-based clinical diagnosis major Randox Laboratories is setting up a manufacturing plant in Bangalore for the bulk production of diagnostic kits for the Indian market. The company has a sales office in Mumbai and is already present in the Indian clinical diagnosis industry in a big way. Its products are used by almost every clinical diagnosis laboratory across the globe. The company, based in Crumlin, has identified a site in Bangalore spread over 20,000 square feet and is currently in the process of completing formalities under the 'single window clearance'. Lorna Lawrence, business development manager, told IANS that the management was "very happy" with the performance of the Indian sales team in the Mumbai office. "After the manufacturing plant is set up in Bangalore, we would look at exporting the diagnostic kits to other countries in the region", she said. Randox Laboratories has pioneered a biochip array technology - called "Evidence" - by which multiple tests can be conducted simultaneously using a small individual patient sample on a 9 mm biochip. Dedicated software performs all system operations from onboard maintenance to calibration validation to patient sample profiling for a variety of test panels. The technology has been approved by the FDA in the US. The technology has been enthusiastically received by five high-end medical centres in India, including Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad, Erlich Laboratories in Coimbatore and Metropolis in Mumbai. "India has been very receptive to this technology. The UK, on the other hand, has not been very receptive because it is very conservative. Only one centre in the country, in Birmingham, uses this technology," Lawrence said. She said that in India, the technology was being used for pre-employment screening in call centres and the airline industry to check abuse of drugs and to provide accurate data for cardiac markers, fertility and thyroid hormones and tumour markers. Randox Laboratories is owned by the locally based Fitzgerald family.
