NEW DELHI: An Indian pharmaceutical company Tuesday announced the launch of an anti-infective injectable for the first time in the domestic market. Launched under the brand name of Cilanem by Ranbaxy Laboratories, India's largest drug maker by sales, the anti-infective injectable can be used for life-threatening infections, said a company statement issued here. New Delhi-based Ranbaxy said Cilanem would compete in the high-end injectable antibiotic segment. Based on market research, Ranbaxy estimates the product market size in India to be around 1.5 billion. Internationally, this molecule is doing good business with sales of around $585 million, it said. "The introduction of Cilanem will give the brand a first mover advantage in the highly progressive market," said Malvinder Mohan Singh, regional director (India) of Ranbaxy Laboratories.
