Bangalore: Qualcomm, the U.S. - based chip maker is planning to sell the yet-to-start wireless broadband service in India. The company won these permits with a minimum price of 5,000 crore for its airwaves and permits in the four circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Haryana and Kerala in an eagerly contested auction which was held in five months back, reports Joji Thomas Philip from The Economic Times. Executives with direct knowledge of the developments said Qualcomm has approached leading mobile phone companies offering a 100 percent stake in all the four spectrum-holding companies. The chip maker was the only technology company to win airwaves in the auction that concluded in June. It bagged broadband wireless airwaves in four circles and paid Rs 4,913 crore for its licences. When asked about the plans to exit India Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm's CEO said "Qualcomm has publicly stated that it will work with 3G operators to develop the 3G+LTE ecosystem, commercially deploy LTE TDD in the BWA spectrum, and then to exit its India LTE venture. Consistent with those goals, discussions with operators on LTE TDD commercialization and on commercials related to Qualcomm's BWA spectrum are indeed ongoing. These discussions are, however, confidential and Qualcomm cannot comment on speculation regarding specifics."
