Qualcomm plans engineering center in India

BANGALORE: Qualcomm Inc., the leading US-based telecom major, is planning to set up an engineering support centre in India. The Indian centre will be Qualcomm's fifth such facility the world over, after similar centres at San Diego in the US, China, Japan and South Korea. Qualcomm director Brian Dunphy told reporters here Thursday the in-house support centre would cater to the company's Internet services. The global firm develops innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on code divisional multiplex access (CDMA) digital technology. "We see India as the hottest growth market. The engineering support centre focused on Internet services will be set up in the next three to six months and will function as a lab for our developers," Dunphy said. The company is, however, yet to decide on the location of the centre, the proposed investment and its headcount. Qualcomm recently opened its research and development centre for chipsets at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. "Our employee strength in the centre is expected to go up over 100 in the next 12 months," Dunphy said. Qualcomm has so far licensed its CDMA patent portfolio to 125 telecom equipment manufacturers worldwide. Dunphy was in the city in connection with the launch of Tata Indicom's push-to-talk services in India, which uses Qualcomm's BrewChat solution. The solution has been licensed to Japan's Kyocera Wireless Corp for manufacturing mobile handsets enabling push-to-talk service.
