Project delays in Kerala a deterrent for investors: Vayalar Ravi

Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi Sunday urged trade unions and workers in Kerala to desist from delaying construction work at projects in the state as it deterred investors. "The take-off time in construction activities in projects in the state is a deterrent factor for those who are investing. A delay in the construction activity on account of strikes means a huge loss for the investor because the funds come by way of loans. This should not happen," said Ravi. Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Indian Institute Of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM) at Vithura near the state capital, the minister said he made this statement because he too was a trade union leader and well aware of the rights of the workers. "But inordinate delay over squabbles at the time of construction should be best avoided. Please cooperate in this aspect, otherwise it would be a national loss," Ravi said. Later speaking to IANS, Ravi said the IISER, which is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards, will come up on 200 acres of land that the state government has provided. "Right now the institute is functioning from the College of Engineering campus here and in two years, it is expected the new campus would be partially ready," said Ravi. Established in 2008 by the central government, IISER-TVM is an autonomous institution awarding five-year integrated MS degree in addition to Ph.D degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and inter-disciplinary areas. Ravi also asked the students to take a cue from "Slumdog Millionaire" and said that this should be an impetus to one and all. "If they are waiting in the wings for an Oscar, you students should set your goals for a Nobel Prize. Have the fire and determination in you and you will be successful," he added.
