Private operators grab 43 percent of telecom market

NEW DELHI: According to a source, private telecom operators have managed to grab 43 percent of the total revenue generated from telecom services during 2004-05. The telecom services industry in the country grew by 16 percent from $130 million in 2003-04 to $151 million in 2004-05, a survey carried out by 'Voice and Data' said. As per the survey, cellular services continued their great march, growing at 63 percent last year, whereas fixed services posted a negative growth of 1 percent, although it still formed the biggest chunk of the telecom services market. The report revealed that, national long distance (STD) services grew by 22 percent while international long distance (ISD) services slipped by 12 percent. On the much talked about broadband, the report found that the Internet services could grow by only one percent. According to the survey, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) occupied the top slot with revenue of $80 million among top 10 service providers followed by Bharti with $71 million in 2004-05. Another PSU, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) came third with revenue of $13 million followed by Reliance and Hutch. Tatas-owned companies like VSNL and Tata Tele grabbed the sixth and eighth slot respectively.
