Premji set to revive Wipro and take on Infy, Cognizant
Bangalore:Wipro , an IT outsourcing giant's Chairman Azim Premji seems to be all set to revive the company's lost stature . He wants Wipro to retain its position as third largest IT service provider in the country. In a letter to his employees Premji said, "We at Wipro are at an inflection point. The only way ahead is - up. The market has changed but have we?" he asked. Restructuring of the organization earlier this year by replacing the joint CEOs Suresh Vaswani and Girish Paranjpe with single CEO TK Kurien created an overhaul among the employees and surprised the entire IT industry. Cognizant has almost narrowed the revenue gap in their last two quarters which created a sort of unrest in the company. Premji provoked employees in the letter to take prompt decisions in offering solutions to the clients without delay, instead of just getting the orders. He asked them to build relation of trust with their clients. He said, "The days of the order taker are over. We need to be able to translate business needs into technology needs. This can only happen when we have a deep knowledge of the customer's business." He also said, "Now more than ever, you can't afford to overanalyze. This is the catalyst to bring speed and business agility into our business operations." Wipro's growth has witnessed a sudden downfall in the last few quarters with the economic downturn and IT industry has faced spurt in demand in the banking and financial services (BFSI) sector. Cognizant and TCS who are leaders in this vertical managed to survive the recession and they grew. While announcing the single CEO structure in January Premji said, the company would increase its focus on the BFSI and healthcare sectors and that a single CEO would be able to respond to the market demands faster as growth returned. Premji said every business unit should build innovative solutions around the technologies like cloud computing and mobile computing which plays a disruptive role in the IT service space; else Wipro would be left behind.
