Premier IT event to focus on IP development

Bangalore: The eighth edition of India's premier IT event, BangaloreIT.in 2006, slated from Oct 28, will focus on intellectual property (IP) developments taking place in the country to create high-end products for global markets.
The four-day technology exposition, being organised by the Karnataka government and the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), will showcase a representative set of companies developing IP with their products.
"This is the first time an exclusive pavilion christened 'IP zone' will be part of this IT event at the sprawling Bangalore Palace grounds where 14 Indian companies creating IP will be displaying their technologies and products developed for global markets," Karnataka IT secretary M. Vidyashankar told IANS here.
Among the IP firms participating in the IP zone are ASL Advanced Systems, Broadcom, GloNetworks, Ittiam, Mistral Software, nCore Technologies, netDevices, NXP, Rambus, SiNett, SiRF, Tejas and Xora.
Bangalore is the hub of chip design activities and many city-based semiconductor and design firms will be pitching in the IP zone to showcase their capabilities.
"The objective of the IP zone is to highlight the evolution of the Indian IT industry from delivering software and BPO services to hi-tech products for domestic as well as global customers. Many IT services and product firms are also engaged in developing IP for positioning India on par with the US, Japan and the EU in IP creation," Vidyashankar said.
With "Innovative India" as its theme, the IP zone will have technologies and products on display to demonstrate their utility in daily life and their application in making enterprises cost-effective and competitive globally.
"The IP zone will provide an ideal platform to create awareness about IP developments in the subcontinent among the stakeholders, including CXOs, IT professionals, government functionaries and trade organisations," said STPI Bangalore director B.V. Naidu.
As part of the IP zone initiative, a forum for small and medium enterprises (SME) is being set up to deliberate on the issues faced by the SME sector in the IT industry. The forum will review the government policies pertaining to the SMEs and draw an action plan to make them viable in the face of competition from their counterparts - Indian majors and multinationals.
To be headed by Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) director S. Sadagopan, the SME forum will also deal with the IP development in India.
"Of the 5,000 IT firms across the country, about 4,500 are in the SME sector, accounting for over 40 percent of India's IT exports. The need of the hour is to find viable solutions to the challenges faced by the sector. Besides raising capital and training manpower, the challenge is to find addressable markets for their products," said Brickwork India CEO Vivek Kulkarni, a former state IT secretary.
Spread over 20,000 square metres, the IT exhibition will have eight more focus pavilions - e-Nation, e-Hardware and Digital Lifestyle, e-Software, e-Infocom, e-Gaming and Animation, e-States, IT Park and STPI.
Of the 300 firms participating in Asia's largest IT event, more than half (175) have presence in 18 countries the world over. Similarly, 16 state governments across the country will promote their states as IT destinations to attract investments from domestic and overseas players.
Among the foreign countries to be represented by their companies are Australia, Belgium, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, Singapore, Spain and the US.
