Power situation in Madhya Pradesh improves

Bhopal: People in Madhya Pradesh may not have to suffer extra power cuts the rest of the summer as the state government Sunday said the electricity situation was improving.
With the improvement in the supply of coal for the state's thermal power plants, power supply too has improved, an official said.
"No unscheduled power cut was made anywhere in the state after May 23 and power is being supplied for 21 instead of 19 hours at the district level and 19 instead of 15 hours at the tehsil level. In villages 16-hour, continuous power supply is being maintained," an official statement said.
The government accepted that it drew power above its allotted quota from the central grid in the past, "but now the situation was not so".
Effective measures taken during the last four years to improve power transmission have also resulted in increased transmission capacity, the statement said.
As a result, the transmission capacity has increased to 6,493 MW in 2006-07 as against 3,890 MW in 2002-03. The state has set a transmission capacity target of 8,170 MW for 2008-09, it said.
