Power crisis bleeding industry in National Capital Region: Assocham

New Delhi: Industrial units in the national capital region (NCR), comprising Delhi and adjoining areas, spend 
14 billion annually on generator sets because of poor power supply, a leading industry body has said.
The near 40,000 industrial units in the NCR consume 350 million litres of diesel annually, spending 1.17 billion every month, said the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham).
Power from generators accounts for 40 percent of production at these units, the chamber said. BPOs spend the most, up to 135,000 a month, on generator diesel.
"The NCR belt on an average suffers power scarcity for eight to 10 hours a day, which has forced the units to install on an average between four to six generator sets in each industrial location," Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat said while releasing the assessment report on the subject Tuesday.
"It's not only the cause of environmental and sound pollution but is also a sheer waste of diesel," he added.
Rawat said total diesel consumption was much higher if one took into account the fuel consumption by the near 160 shopping malls, over 3,400 shops and the 260 hospitals.
