Portal Software Inc., a U.S.-based leading provider of billing and customer management software, Wednesday announced the launch of its development centre in Bangalore. The centre, which will initially have 40 software developers, will provide additional development resources to focus on specific application extensions.

NEW DELHI: The Nasdaq stock exchange-listed company also announced the appointment of dedicated local sales and marketing teams with a view to increase its presence in India and other Asia Pacific markets, the statement added. "Our new development centre and dedicated staff in India will offer many benefits to both Portal and our customers," said Marc Aronson, senior vice president of engineering at Portal. "In addition to giving us access to the strong talent pool located in Bangalore and establishing our presence in a growing market region, our new office enables us to cost-effectively expand our total R&D capacity for customers world-wide." Portal has had a presence in the Indian market through its Singapore and Asia-Pacific operations for the past three years. The company has appointed Shailendra Singh as country sales manager for India and the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) region. "Looking at the vast population of both enterprise and personal consumers, combined with the on-going maturation of the telecommunications infrastructure, India is ripe for a telecom boom," said John Tull, general manager of Portal. "The key for the service providers will be the ability to rapidly define, deploy and bill for new services with flexible business models. "We are confident that Portal can bring real value to India's service provider base while grabbing a significant portion of the market opportunity there," Tull added. Portal Software develops product-based customer management and billing solutions for communications and content service providers. The company's customers include Vodafone, AOL Time Warner, Deutsche Telekom, NTT, China Telecom and Telstra.
