NEW DELHI: A high-level trade delegation from the Port of London arrived in India Monday to discuss continued and potential trade links with key companies and operators in the transport and shipping sectors. The Port of London is the only British port that directly serves London, together with the prosperous southeast of the country. It handles over 50 million tonnes of cargo each year and is the second largest port in the U.K. The delegation, headed by Steve Cuthbert, chief executive of the Port of London, will seek to promote facilities offered by to Indian companies doing business with Britain and Europe, said a British High Commission statement. The delegation will host a reception at the high commission on Wednesday and will conduct a series of meetings in New Delhi with representatives of the Indian shipping industry and government during the week. "A central aim of the trade mission is to promote the Europe Pakistan India Consortium (EPIC) shipping service that transferred its British port of call to Tilbury in the Port of London in 2002," said the statement. With EPIC ships now calling in London, Indian companies doing or planning business with Britain will benefit from the Port's close proximity to the major markets of London and the southeast of England, it added. The Port of London comprises over 70 independently owned terminals that handle a very wide range of cargo. It also has good transport links to the rest of Britain and the European mainland.
