Kochi: The Centre for Public Policy and Research (CPPR), a Kochi-based think tank has unveiled a project called Digital Right to Information (RTI) Mission. The Mission aims to modernize the usage of the RTI Act for it to be more effective and to avoid duplication in the process of obtaining information. D. Dhanuraj, Chairman, CPPR, said that the lack of a dedicated space facilitating easy and speedy access of information extracted through the RTI from across the state had led to the idea of digitalization of RTI information and making it available on a Wikipedia-like platform. According to him, the lack of compilation and storage of the information generated, often resulted in loss of man-hours enabling public information officers to take refuge in the lame excuse by citing at the cumbersome process involved. Under the first phase of the project lasting ten months from October to July next year, copies of RTI applications and information provided on them would be collected from major public information offices and the State Information Commission. It would be then digitalized and made available on the website, said Sreeja Chandran, Coordinator of the Digital RTI Mission. RTI inputs would be uploaded on to the proposed website in five different categories - health, road and transport, power, water and education. Dhanuraj said that Kudumbasree activists from over 100 villages in the state would be trained in the first phase of the project. More than 2 lakh would be needed for the implementation of the first phase of the project.
