Patni revives strategy to up employee accountability
Mumbai: Trying to find a place among IT giants, Patni Computer Systems is planning to roll out a dual-reporting structure in April'10, where every employee will report directly to one manager and also have a 'dotted-line' relationship with another manager. Talking to Economic Times, Jeya Kumar, CEO, Patni Computer Systems said, "We felt that this is the right way to do it. This industry will always have to operate on a direct and dotted line basis. But we need to make sure that both the dotted line and direct line managers are empowered." Once the new strategy will be brought into action, the direct line manager will have 51 percent vote and the dotted line manager a 49 percent vote on the performance of an employee. Direct line manager will be playing the role of developing the employee's competence and career, while that of the dotted line manager will be to ensure the employee gives the support that is needed to achieve the business outcomes. Under the new model, an account manager, who is responsible for a client relationship, will have an 'absolute say' in the performance of an employee though the employee does not directly report to him. "We want to make sure the client partner has a real say in the performance and quality of services that get delivered," said Kumar. The dual-reporting model will be applicable to all employees except those below the level of project manager and those reporting directly to the CEO, helping Patni become client-focused at the employee level.
