NEW DELHI: With economic and people-to-people contacts between India and Britain growing at a rapid pace, partnership opportunities between the two sides were "almost endless", Britain's new envoy to India said Thursday. Michael Arthur took over Thursday as Britain's high commissioner to India, succeeding Rob Young, who retired earlier this month. "The Indo-British relationship is vitally important, vibrant and expanding," said Arthur in a statement issued by the British high commission. "Our level of cooperation has never been as full or effective. It stretches from culture and education to international diplomacy and the shared fight against terrorism." Arthur said one of the great strengths of the ties was "the number of people-to-people links, not least given the important British Indian community". "This is only a beginning for me, but the partnership opportunities for Britain and India are almost endless," he said. For the past two years, Arthur was director general in the British Foreign Office dealing with economic issues, including with the G8 and the European Union. He has also served as deputy head of the British embassy in Washington.
