Parliamentary panel visits Amritsar's airport to help save it

Amritsar: A parliamentary panel, led by Sports Minister Manohar Singh Gill, Tuesday visited the international airport at Rajasansi near here and said it would submit a detailed report to the civil aviation ministry to save the airport.
Gill, accompanied by Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, former union minister and MP S.S. Dhindsa, Rajya Sabha member Tarlochan Singh and Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman P.K. Aggarwal, said over 
1.44 billion (144 crore) would be spent by next year to upgrade facilities at the airport, including on widening the runway.
The Rajasansi airport, which last year hit a high of dozens of international and domestic flights operating every week, has run into rough weather with some of the airlines like Singapore Airlines and Jet Airways cutting down their flights from here.
A large number of non-resident Indians (NRIs) have started using the airport instead of Delhi. Nearly 30 percent of passenger traffic at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is from Punjab.
"We have reviewed the ongoing works and more efforts will be made to strengthen infrastructure," Gill said.
The panel said upgradation of facilities at the airport in the next three months will attract airlines to resume services here.
