Pakistani government raises employees' salaries by 20 percent

Islamabad: The Pakistani government has raised the salaries and pensions of its employees by 20 percent, a senior minister has said. The salary hike will be effective for employees in grades one to 16. "On our request, the prime minister directed the concerned authorities to raise the government employees' salaries by 20 percent. It was also decided that those government employees who had retired before 2000 would get 20 a percent rise in pensions," Dawn Saturday quoted Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Farooq Sattar as saying. He spoke after a meeting here Friday with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and advisor to the prime minister Shaukat Tarin discussed the Finance Bill 2009-10. Meanwhile, National Assembly member Haji Adeel has suggested that the salaries of employees in grades one to five be raised by 25 percent and those of employees in grades five to 22 be lowered by one per cent. The federal budget for fiscal 2009-10 beginning July 1, presented in the National Assembly June 13, had proposed a 15 percent increase in salaries and pensions of government employees. "However, generally the raise is considered insufficient in the wake of recent high inflation," Dawn noted.
