Bangalore: Witnessing India's shaky scene as an outsourcing hub, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has launched a scholarship program 'INSPIRE' (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) to fortify the country's research and development (R&D) base. Through the program, talent at an early stage will be identified and they will be instructed to pursue it as research careers. "Recognizing the importance of this initiative, the government has made an allocation of 2100 crore for it in the 11th Plan period. It is an important initiative that aims to strengthen the roots of the knowledge infrastructure of the economy," said the PM. Singh ensured that the Indian Government would take all necessary steps to rejuvenate research in the university segment. The program shall work in three phases which includes offering ten lakh young learners an INSPIRE award of 5000 between the age of 10-15 years. A summer camp will also be organized for around 50,000 young persons with international leaders in science and 10,000 scholarships annually will be given for pursuing Bachelor and Masters level education in natural sciences.
