NEW DELHI: The Indian PC market has crossed another milestone with sales touching 1.05 million units in the April-June quarter. HP retained the number one slot in both notebooks and consumer desktops category, according to research firm IDC. During the April-June quarter of 2005, the PC market witnessed a 9 percent sequential and a 31 percent year on year growth to reach 1.05 million units, IDCs India quarterly PC market tracker reports aid. In the overall client PC (desktops and notebooks) HP has retained its top slot with a sequential increase of 19 percent and a year on year 45 percent growth. HCL retained its second position with a 40 percent year on year growth. Lenovo (IBM PCs) occupied third position. The commercial desktops category witnessed a 1 percent sequential growth and a 22 percent year on year growth. HCL led the rank followed closely by HP. Lenovo and Dell however grew faster at sequential growth rates of 31 percent and 75 percent respectively. The consumer desktops segment witnessed a 16 percent growth sequentially and a 30 percent year on year growth. HP has again maintained a lead while HCL was a close second. The clearing of the cloud over Value Added Tax (VAT), the drop in prices on account of rationalization of duty structures and the onset of summer vacations were key contributing factor to the growth displayed by this segment, IDC said. The notebook PC segment was the star performer, showing massive growth, 60 percent sequentially and 138 percent year on year and crossing the 100,000 barrier, yet another first.
