New Delhi: The government has developed over 75 portals dedicated to the farm sector in a bid to make farmers aware of developments in technology and connect them better to the market, it said here Tuesday. "For agricultural growth, it is very important to equip farmers with the latest technology. Mobile technology can bring about the much-needed interface with farmers," said Sanjeev Gupta, Joint Secretary in the department of agriculture and cooperation. The department has developed over 75 agriculture information portals and applications under its e-agro drive, Gupta said at a seminar titled "E-nabled Development: E-Agriculture in India's Current Progress Canvas", organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). "We are also attempting to bring information and communication technology (ICT) to the farmers community through various projects," he added. "These portals will inform them (farmers) about the monsoon, weather conditions, latest technologies and will also help them to connect with the market to sell their produce at right price," Gupta told IANS on the sidelines of the meet. Added M. Moni, Deputy Director General of the government's web services organisation, National Informatics Centre, "ICT will solve many problems. If the monsoon is delayed, we can inform them to delay the sowing process so that there can be minimal harvest loss." Moni also said about 12,000 fishermen's cooperative societies will be networked in the near future.
