Over 36 mn workers in unorganised manufacturing sector: study

New Delhi: Over 36 million people were employed with 17.07 million unorganised manufacturing enterprises (UMEs) in 2005-06, says the latest report of the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).
NSSO, an agency under the ministry of statistics and programme implementation, Thursday released the report titled "Unorganised Manufacturing Sector in India-Input, Output and Value Added".
It said 71 percent of UMEs were located in the rural areas.
The gross value added (GVA) by the UMEs in 2005-06 was estimated to be over 
870 billion ($21.8 billion). The GVA measures the contribution of each individual producer or industry to the economy.
"At the national level, the GVA per unit is estimated to be 51,307, while that of per worker is 24,034," the report said, adding that raw materials constituted around 85 percent of the total operating expenses for UMEs.
The NSSO survey covered around 82,897 enterprises.
As per an estimate, there are over 430 million people engaged in the unorganised sector. The government is in the process of providing life and disability insurance cover, health protection and old age security to them.
