Washington: Microsoft said Tuesday that over 1.5 million of Windows-based phones were sold by manufacturers in the first six weeks after their launch. The sales of the handset are in line with the company's expectations, said Achim Berg, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business & Marketing Group in an article on the company website. Among the companies manufacturing Windows Phone 7 handsets include Samsung Electronics, HTC, Dell and LG. In a bid to make a dent in the highly competitive smartphone market, Microsoftstarted selling its Windows phone in November. The new device launched in Europe and the Asia Pacific region on October 21 and in the U.S. and Canada on November 8. While over 18,000 software developers were making applications for Windows Phone 7 handsets, 4,000 applications are currently available. As per data released by Gartner, Microsoft's share of the global mobile operating system market will fall to 4.7 percent this year from 8.7 percent last year.
