Orissa gets faster Net connectivity through cable

BHUBANESWAR: Net access in Orissa has got a major boost with a state-run company launching advanced broadband cable Internet services.
Ortel Communication, Orissa's leading cable TV multi-service operator (MSO), has launched DOCSIS 2.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) standards under the brand name Ortel.net, its general manager B.S. Mishra said.
Founded in 1995 as a spin off joint venture with non-resident Indian (NRI) investors with an investment capital of 
300 million, Ortel Communication provides convergence-related telecom and broadcast services to customers in India.
"We were using DOCSIS 1.0 standard technology for the service. Now with the improved version DOCSIS 2.0 we become the first company in South Asia, and this takes India to the fourth position after the U.S., Japan and China to have adopted this state of the art technology," Mishra claimed.
The new service, launched on Wednesday, will provide subscribers with a range of facilities including guaranteed bandwidth with speed exceeding 30 times that of current systems to access the Net.
With DOCSIS 2.0, MSOs can more cost-effectively offer symmetric services such as peer-to-peer networking, Internet protocol telephony, video-conferencing, mission critical remote applications and online gaming to their residential as well as business clients.
Ortel Communication has launched the new service in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar where it has a subscriber base of 500, Mishra said.
The service would also be cheaper. It would cost subscribers 50 percent less than what they were paying for other services on offer, he added.
"With this advanced Internet technology, the company hopes that its subscriber base would triple in less then three months," Mishra told IANS.
Ortel's first project in Orissa was building the state-of-the-art Hybrid Fibre Co-axial (HFC) network capable of providing a gamut of telecom and broadcast services. This is already partly operational with more than 2,000 km of cabling having been installed till date, he said.
Ortel provides cable TV services under the brand name Sky View Home Cable, which is the dominant service provider in its market and the largest MSO in the state with almost 80 percent market share.
The company hopes to reach a turnover of 1 billion in the next couple of years by extending its operations to other areas of communications, Mishra said.
