Orissa develops multiple resistance crop varieties

BHUBANESHWAR: The Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has developed six new varieties of crops which are resistance to diseases and pest. These include one of rice, one of rapeseed-mustard, two varieties each of sesame and green grams. They have been named Jagadamba, Anuradha, Nirmala, Prachi, OBGG-52 and OUM-11-5 respectively, a university official said Thursday. Jagadamba, a long duration crop, is suitable under low land situation and can mature in 150 days. Anuradha can be grown in rain-fed conditions and has a yield potential of 13-15 quintals per hectare. While Nirmala is suitable for coastal ecosystem and can be grown in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Prachi has multiple resistances to major diseases and pests.
