Bangalore: Infosys and Wipro are in talks with International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA), a Bangalore based NGO for the supply of organically grown vegetables to their canteens, which they will use in their canteens soon.
ICCOA helps the farmers to market their produce and sell organic vegetables through various outlets in Bangalore as they have recently tied up with Safal, a unit of Mother Dairy Foods Processing.

"Presently, there are 450 farmers registered with us who are growing organic vegetables and we are in the process of providing them market linkages. We have just tied up with Safal and are in dialogue with other retail chains like Spencer's and Food World. We have also had preliminary talks with Infosys and Wipro for supply to their canteens in Bangalore," said Sunil Kumar S, principal consultant, Aum Consulting, a Chennai-based consultancy firm and director of ICCOA.
With the help of ICCOA, farmers have formed three groups in Devanahalli, Doddaballapur and Chikkaballapur. These farmers supply 3.5 tonnes of organic vegetables to Safal everyday, which are sorted, graded, cleaned and packed for sale in their 22 outlets in Bengaluru. The daily capacity will be scaled up to 10 tonnes in two months.
The organic products' business is estimated to be worth
450 crore (
4.5 billion) in India of which exports account for
350 crore (
3.5 billion). Manoj Menon, Executive Director, ICCOA, said they were also in dialogue with state-owned Horticultural Producers' Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society (Hopcoms) for supply of organic vegetables. "I have spoken to the director of horticulture department and he has promised to identify select half a dozen outlets in Bangalore city for launch of organic vegetables," he said.

1: Dear Editor
It is a right step by Wipro and TCS and shows the Corporate Social Responsibility May I please make suggestions to Sri Azim Premiji and Sri Narayana Murthy
1.Indian farmers are using Urea and other chemicals for the pest control and other related issues for crops like Paddy and Sugarcane.I know sri Narayana Murthy has the venture fund Cataraman that has already financed Micro finance Ventures. Is there a way we can indigenious techniques and combine that with traditional knowledge to come up with a chemical nuetral fertilizer.
2.If such a chemical nuetral fertilizer can be developed then perhaps we can scale as a commercial venture across India and such a supply chain can be venture funded.
3.My gradfather was a farmer and I had keenly observed the agricultural fields in Krishna Dt Andhra Pradesh,,If we can have a chemical nuetral fertilizer,,we can save soil fertility,,improve crop yield and quality of the rice produced.
4.Sir,,it is my humble request ,,if the esteemed Indian corporates can come to the aid of Indian farmer ,,and help find such solutions in conjunction with Agricultural research Institutes

2:Hi Rama,
If u look up the internet you will find that already there are such fertilizers available. Some are being marketed, some are made by the farmers themselves. Organic pesticides and chemical neutral fertilizers are available fairly easily BUT usually farmers do not adopt them immediately because the fertilizing capability will go down from current levels for upto 3 yrs of their usage. After 3 years the usage of organic fertilizers will start giving better yields than normal chemical fertilizers.

3: Hi Maddy, your answer is pretty good but this
is regarding Food wastage generated Organic
fertilizer which is being using for
Vegetables growing which is not contains any
kind of chemical contaminant. Such
fertilizers can’t be generated in City
environment in much amount but it is
appreciable to these above corporate
generating such things. Which make
contribution of the down level team which
working for proper segregation of the food
wastage then processing for a week become
healthy fertilizer. Request you all readers
to have such beautiful process implementation
in your organizations if possible. This
contributes Environmental safety for our
future generation. Thanks all and further
valuable suggestions if any.
Warm Regards
