Oracle to double India headcount to 6,000

Oracle, the world's leading enterprise software company, plans to double its workforce in India in the next one year.

BANGALORE: According to a leading business daily in India, currently, Oracle India has 3,000 plus employees and the figure is expected to cross 6,000 mark in the next one year, according to Derek Williams, Executive Vice President, Oracle Asia Pacific. Oracle, the daily reported, runs 2 development centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad contributing towards development of Oracle product family. "Currently India is Oracle's fifth-largest market in the region after Japan, Korea, China and Australia in terms of revenues, up from tenth position two years ago. We expect India to catch up and surpass Australia in the next couple of year years," Williams said. In the longer term, Williams said that his vision was that "China will be the largest market in Asia Pacific, and India will be number two surpassing Japan...But I can't say how much time it will take." On his plans for expansion in India, Williams said Oracle will increase its manpower in both Bangalore and Hyderabad. "In Hyderabad, we have acquired the land and construction will start soon," he said. In India, the growth would take place in areas such as e-governance, telecom, manufacturing and financial services, Williams added. Asia Pacific and Japan contributed 14 per cent to Oracle's worldwide revenues in the last financial year. On whether the company planned to increase outsourcing of application development from India, Williams said, "We are interested in what the outsourcing market offers around the world and we are exploring ways to grow our business in that sector. It is one opportunity." He said Oracle would also look at what India offered in this respect. Williams said Oracle's development programme in India was continuing. "India is going to be a strong market opportunity for us and our partners," he said. The Bangalore centre focuses on Oracle's core application development tools, server and platform technologies and Hyderabad centre is dedicated to e-business applications. Hyderabad centre has 1200 engineers developing all aspects of e-business suite including core business functions ranging from sales and marketing to manufacturing, financial and human resource management. Oracle has also launched a special edition of its e-Business Suite in the country to cater to the growing demand of enterprise business applications from the mid sized (25-400 crores) enterprises. Shekhar Dasgupta, Managing Director, Oracle India informed, “With a rapid implementation methodology, and affordable pricing, which is further enhanced with the use of Linux on Intel platform, the solution will enable mid-sized companies in India to achieve critical business control and decision-making quickly and cost effectively.
