Bangalore: Opera Software, a web browser developer with more than 110 million users across the world, has become the first customer of Iceland's Thor Data Center by opening a new data center in Hafnarfjorour, the third largest city in Iceland, reports John Oram for TechEye. According to a Thor spokesman, only renewable energy will be used by them and they will be able handle 78 Petabytes of data, which is equal to about a trillion Facebook pages. Founded by a few experienced Icelandic entrepreneurs, the Thor Data Center was financed by Icelandic venture capitalists. According to the country's Minister of Industry, Iceland's climate makes it ideal for air-cooled data centers. Its mid-Atlantic location makes an ideal base for companies with business in both North America and Europe, claimed Iceland's Minister of Industry. A significant part of Opera's electronic data traffic will be moved the Thor Data Center via sub-sea cables, that are run by the Icelandic submarine cable operator called E-Farice. The process will also include Tyco Telecommunications. Iceland has three main submarine cable systems - Tele Greenland's Greenland Connect system, eFarice's FARICE-1 system and eFarice's DANICE. According to Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, founder of Opera Software, Opera signed the agreement with Thor Data Center because; it can offer Opera energy from 100 percent renewable sources. In coming years, Iceland will be able to provide a more stable supply of energy than most other areas in the world, said Tetzchner.
