Oil, gas found near Ahmedabad

Oil and gas have been discovered near Ahmedabad, the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) announced Wednesday. The size of reserves were not indicated.

AHMEDABAD: "During the course of drill stem testing (DST), we have observed flow of oil and gas from various depths," the state government-owned corporation said in a press release. GSPC is the operator for Ahmedabad exploration block near Ingoli village in Ahmedabad district. The block was awarded to the GSPC-led consortium under the second New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP-II) by India's petroleum ministry on July 17, 2001. The corporation said that the drilling of the first exploratory well commenced on May 7, 2003. "During the course of the drilling, which has now reached up a depth of 1,750 meters, a number of DST have been carried out and we have observed flow of oil and gas at various depths such as 1179-1186 meters, 1195-1255 meters, 1239-1243 metres and 1360-1380 metres," the release added. The well will be drilled 2,000 metres and more finds are not ruled out. The DST data is currently being evaluated. Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) is a non-operating partner in the Ahmedabad block with a 40 percent interest. Earlier, GSPC had found gas reserves of 20 billion cubic metres (BCM) at Hazira in 2001. In November 2002, it was awarded an offshore exploration block in Krishna-Godavari basin in NELP-III.
