Now, call cops in India and hear anti-terror caller tunes

Bangalore: Citizens calling the police will now be greeted with 'anti-terror' and 'anti-crime' caller tunes that instruct them on steps to be taken in the eventuality of an attack. According to law enforcement officers, the move may raise awareness levels on criminals and terrorists and help thwart their attempts to carry out disruptive activities in places across the state, reports DNA.

"If everything goes well, we will soon be adding this feature to the cellphones of our officers. When people in distress call up the police, it would be beneficial if they are informed about how to spot any tell-tale signs of terror or identify the possibility of crimes occurring in the locality. These automated warnings will create some much-needed awareness, which will help a lot in preventing crime," said Ajai Kumar Singh, Director General of police.

The Police is trying to take all necessary measures to install the caller tune on the mobile phones of police personnel as soon as possible. Additional Director General of Police (Crime and Technical Services) Om Prakash said that the Police Department would hold discussions on the issue soon. "We are planning to enlist the help of the BSNL in this regard," he said.

"This will act as an informal campaign to create awareness among citizens to take care of their areas. The idea is to make every citizen conscious of his immediate surroundings and contact the police whenever he finds something suspicious. If the common man becomes alert, anti-social elements will have no chance of indulging in disruptive activities," a police officer said.
