Now, a robot for Rs. 15k: Courtesy Indian Engineer
Bangalore: An Indian engineering graduate, Pulkit Gaur, has developed a robot that can go underwater and clean water or chemical tanks. This project is developed by Gridbots, an entrepreneurial venture by Gaur, this low-cost robot will remove any sludge particles in water. "This compact machine has tracks fitted for movement. It has a drive system on the front side to which a brush mechanism is attached to scratch dirt from the tank walls. We are also considering using a filter," said Gaur to Bangalore Mirror.

This robot is available for consumers as well. This robot is available at 15,000 to 20,000, and is a consumer version of SaUsR, the robot that is already in use in medicine industries. These robots are targeted at those who make medicines. They employ them to prevent sludge formation in tanks. "SaUsR carries out underwater operations with ease and lets you use this robot as a sophisticated underwater cleaning unit. It has on-board intelligent electronics that lets it navigate in fully-autonomous mode. With a high resolution on-board camera having pan-tilt capabilities, it can spot even minutest details of your water/chemical tank," said Gaur.

Gaur is a production and industrial engineer from MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur. He graduated in 2004 and since then has been pursuing his childhood passion. "I have been working on these robots since school days. Earlier, it was all about taking part in competitions. I soon realized robotics was in its nascent stage, and a lot can be built on it," he said. His resume goes up to 17 pages and was appreciated by former President A P J Abdul Kalam for his efforts.

Gridbots was a start-up that took shape through his passion for robotics. "I wanted to start a venture that would come up with innovative products that run on intelligence. I wanted to do something more than the assembly of robots. It had to be a multi-purpose product for my client," he said. Gridbots started two years ago in Ahmedabad and presently employs 15 people. It plans to recruit 35 more by this year-end.

Gaur already has many plans chalked out for his company. "We are working on developing defence robots, and also a surveillance robot that can be controlled via mobile or the Internet," he added. Few of his other creations include an image- understanding technology and a consumer robot that does household chores.

Dear Pulkit,
Fantastic device. Now if you could develop a hoover / vacuum cleaner that lasts more than a year (really it should last many years, it's only a motor that runs a few hours a month) and sells for under $100, you could become a millionaire overnight -- if you can find a manufacturer to make them.
They have all decided they will make more money by selling junk. In this economy a lot of people are going to have to make to with a broom! Not just halloween witches either!

And small message to all.
I am not from elctronics background... but understand that.. if you market it properly you can sell anything. grow yourself and your community and country.
Message to mr Gaur... Please dont keep your inventions limited to media... bring them in market in such a way that you can beet Chinese product... dont worry about customer satisfaction now.
Take example of china... how much business they are making in electronic product.. never invents anything just copy it and sell..

I have one more idea for your robot is sludge cleaning in Muncipal drains and SUMPS where poisonous gases emanate lot of cleaning persons are dying due to this gases if you can develop some instrument which can remove this slush or posisonous gases emanating items cost effectively , you can even start service industry with your robos , in the days to come it may be big bussiness with Muncipal authorities.

27: First of all I would like to congratulate "Pulkit" for his tremendous efforts in building this kind of innovative robots, really it will help mankind in many aspects.
If you know that there are robots already there in many manufacturing industries, but the new trend is to make it possible or I can say available in defense of ones country we can already see that US has already created one such namely “Black Dog”, this is done so that human life’s can be saved in war.

Now the point is either is it good for human being or not is still can’t be said until and unless we see that day! But yes if we go on right track on innovation and produce right kind of Robots for adding value to human life and not destructive robots then this will really help and will be good for all.

In future I would love to see a robot, which can do farming, and power itself from solar energy. Not only this it can do many human being jobs, which are repetitive and tedious on day-to-day basses, and believe me this will be achieved very soon. The way technology is getting developed every day. But yes to get there, we need to go too fare to produce that kind of product, which will be “MOTHER” of all products.

51: While appreciating Pulkit Gaur for developing a robot that can go underwater and clean water or chemical tanks I must clarify we have already commercially available methods to do the job. The aim of science and Technology is to reduce the gap of haves and havenots. But the present young Technologists and Entrepreneures mindset always revolves around advanced technologies. In the first instance these technologies come with a bang with wide publicity but ultimately from business development view they are hardly successful as the market segment is limited.

There have to be Technologies which are not energy intensive. Already we have annual power deficit of about 10,000 MW which is likely to go up in the coming years. Energy consumption is loosely correlated with gross national product but there is a large difference even between the most highly developed countries such as Japan and Germany with 6 kW per person and United States with 11.4 kW per person. In developing countries such as ours the per person energy use is closer to 0.7 kW.The Electricity generated in China(Billions of Kilowatts) 2190 while in India 557 Transmission and Distribution losses as percentage of total power 6.8 in china while 23.4 in India Electricity tariff US$/100 KWh 4to 5 in China while 8 to 10 in India.

There are many pressing problems facing the country especially in rural India. If solutions to tackle problems in areas like energy water health etc. through the application of science and technology are attempted then the country can have all-round development. As world renowned scientist late Prof.Y.Nayudamma advocated MODERNISE THE TRADITIONAL-TRADITIONALISE THE MODERN. For rural development the need of the hour is AT ie. Appropriate Technology Alternative Technology Affordable Technology Adaptable Technology Acceptable Technology and Accessible Technology.

I agree with you but lets not underestimate the power of innovative thinking of our Indian scientist ... I really think there are proving that they can also do inventions or modernisation which was otherwise restricted to developed countries like US , Japan .Kudos to scientist ... but yes definitely a long way to go ...

India really lacks in this area and overall in manufacturing compiting devices.

Hey Pulkit,

Many Many Congratulations...

As like you I also dreamt of creating one robot but only difference between you and me is you implemented and I just dreamt of it..:) (thought it looks like silly idea..but if implemented could make a significant difference to our military...and hence thought of sharing with you)

India -Pakistan war was the cause of this idea. I am dreaming of robot which should be capable of replacing our soldiers during wars and hence we need not sacrifice our Jawans.
It should be like a small butterfly (or any insect which is smaller in size which can’t be seen easily and should be able to fly as any flying insect ) loaded with few number of potassium synod (or may be synide) needles (don’t remember exact name but talking about most poisonous material :)) and should be able to shoot terrorist so effectively and efficiently that terrorist couldn’t see that robot even at the distance of 4 to 5 feet and he should get shot dead within a fraction of second without any noise.
Can you imagine

How can we improve
We can fit the high resolution satellite operated camera (aim is to make it totally wireless and almost weight less) at the front side of the robot so that we can even monitor the movement of the same or else we can add some thermal sensing mechanism to identify terrorist (here there are chances that innocent may get punished, so I don’t prefer personally).

It would be great if we can reduce our expense that we spend behind country’s security and instead spend it for some development activity.

You are welcome to comment saying, what a silly idea, what foolish idea or blah blah blah :) but that’s all I wanted to share it with you.

Hope you would give shape to my dream..

Wish you all the best and wishing you bright future ahead…

Hello my friend this is sandeep, your ideas are brilliant & great but this technology is developing stage in the developed nations mostly under the CIA & other security agencies. we all ready introduce the a SPY satellite in the Last year for the border security. But more innovation ass to carried out for the better progress in the technology and we to carry our technology instead depending on other countries bring this technology for the common people and same thing was doing by the Mr Pulkit Gaur , every Indian should appreciate his efforts

science and technology is for peace, development and protection of environment and not for innovation for warfare. Better we think of a sensor to detect destructive ideas and erase it.

I want to state that this is a honest statement. If we can get robots that can do painting jobs, cocunut tree climbing and pulling ripe coconuts down etc... we can sell thousands and relieve thousands of households of everyday agony.

Once again my hearty congratulations and all the best wishes for Mr. Gaur's continued success.
