Imagine the features of ?Walky-talkie? in your mobile phone and you are able to talk to a group of people anywhere, across the country at the same time! Kodiak Networks? push to talk (PTT) device ?Kodiak Instant Calling Facility?, has made this possible. The new technology is a one-way, half-duplex, real-time voice application in which users can instantly call individuals and groups at a press of a button. The California-based mobile service provider with its development center in India claims that the major part of this technology was coded in Bangalore. Explaining the features of this new technology, Giridhar Boray, Country Manager, India, Kodiak Networks, tells Smart Techie that the instant calling facility would enable a group of people to stay in touch over mobile networks. People can make instant calls to a pre-determined group of individuals or utilize the quick group features to create onetime, temporary groups. Citing an example of a Sales manager who wants to find out the status of his mobile sales team at different locations, he said, ?He can create a group and speak to all his team members them simultaneously, so that the group can hear each other at the same time. This is informative and convenient in terms of time and cost saving. ?One unique feature is that it comprises phone numbers irrespective of phone operators. People can make quick calls to other wireless contacts through a simple, menu-driven user interface,? says Boray. Unlike the earlier PTT services launched by a clutch of Indian operators were based on data channels, Kodiak?s PTT works on voice channel based on existing technology. Currently Airtel and Idea have installed this facility in their networks, which will be followed by Tata Tele-services shortly. With a current strength of 200 people, Kodiak Networks India plans to escalate its workforce to 220 by end of this year and 250 by the end of next year.
