India is a key country in Asia for the Oslo-based IT company Trolltech AS, best known for developing Qt - a powerful software development tool.

BANGALORE: "India accounts for less than one percent of Trolltech's total revenues today. This may rise to two to three percent." sales director Grim Steinar Gjonnes told IANS. "India will be among the four most important countries for us in Asia along with Japan, China and South Korea." Trolltech says its Qt products are widely used for commercial software development. Qt is a tool for professional software application across different computer operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac. Trolltech says it is working on establishing a strong and lasting relationship with Indian technology partners and is noticing a steadily increasing inflow of sales requests from the country. "We have identified India as a key country for us in Asia, especially on the desktop side. This (identification) was based on the heavy inflow of sales requests, market potential and maturity, quality and quantity of software engineers, and its position within the international software industry," Gjonnes maintained. Asked whether Qt could support non-English languages, particularly Indian languages, he said the Unicode rendering in Qt was very advanced and included full support for other languages and even bi-directional languages like Hebrew and Arabic. In terms of a potential market for Qt, Gjonnes saw potential on a selective basis, especially from multinationals with whom Trolltech already has a customer relationship and is working on IT projects in India. "Certain vertical markets in which we already have a dominating position, for example within oil and gas, animation and special effects, test and measurement equipment, medical devices, electronic design automation, automotive and machine tools also have a potential," Gjonnes added.
